Happy Birthday Madonna! Five Of Her Fiercest Looks

We confess. We were a Madonna-wanna… We wore the rubber bracelets and the rag in our hair and crosses… lots of crosses. We had a bob which we streaked with Sun-In and since our hair has always been wavy, it looked a lot like Ms. M’s in the ’80′s… We drew the line at lace gloves and bustiers, but we were just a kid so our mom wasn’t gonna let us wear that stuff even if we wanted to. Madonna’s evolving looks are pretty much all iconic at this point. But some worked better than others (seen Desperately Seeking Susan dozens of times, but we can’t even watch Who’s That Girl with a straight face). In honor the pop star’s 53′rd birthday, we present five of our favorite from the lady who may be the fiercest Leo lass of them all. First up, the image above: 5.) Geisha Girl phase, circa 1999. Pale skin, gleaming black hair and red lips. Perfection.

4.) OG Madonna. This look seems sort of a hot mess today, but when Madge broke out it felt fresh and fearless. Madonna took punk rock/alternative style and brought it into the mainstream, which pissed off a lot punk chicks at the time. All the current stars rip off Madonna at some point (one in particular), but look closely at her dis-sheveled 80′s getups and it’s more Ke$ha than Gaga.

3.) The Vogue Vamp. She started cleaning up her style and going for a more old Hollywood look here. Androgyny was also a part of the mix, though (the suit and bra combo from the video), and it was highlighted by some forceful crotch-grabbing. Beauty, bravado and bi-sexuality: nobody did it -or does it- better.

2.) Marilyn meets Maddy. Don’t think she looked much better than when we she was channeling Marilyn Monroe. Her blonde bombshell looks were badass mainly because there was nothing Barbie about them. One thing we’ve always wondered, though: was that beauty mark above her lip ever really real?

1.) Disco Diva. Surely not the first choice most would think of as Madonna’s best look, but it should be in the Top Five and here’s why: in 2005, she was 47 year old, still boogie-ing bodaciously and still pulling it off. Who else can say that? On a personal note, we loved all her purple get-ups and the red tinted tresses.
