Warrant’s Jani Lane In Never Before Seen Photos

We are excited to share the first of what will be many exclusive memoir-driven commentaries from our good friend Heidi Richman. Heidi, a marketing expert currently breaking ground via her company Future Content, has done it all: music management, event promotion, even fashion design and styling. She was the go-to gal for the metal scene during its 80s heyday in fact, and is largely responsible for setting trends during the era. Here, she shares some exclusive memories and photographs from a forthcoming book about her life featuring her friend and former client Jani Lane, who passed away just a couple weeks ago and was honored at the Key Club this past Monday (see video at end of post). -LL

Losing loved ones is never pretty. I was on a train zipping home from Paso Robles when I got the news that Warrant frontman Jani Lane was found dead in a Comfort Inn in Woodland Hills — a jarring reality check amid the pretty seascapes swooshing past my window…

Jani’s untimely death kick-started a collective mourning; the internets are oozing with memories thought-provoking, poignant, and cathartic. I want to celebrate our friendship and amazing professional collaboration with my ten favorite Jani pictures. I have been saving these for my book, but this is the perfect time and place– my L.A. Slush debut– to share them with you!

10. One of my favorite things about the rockin 80′s was the sense of family that developed among so many of my clients at the time. I had very recently lost my father to cancer, so this spangled bunch of leather lotharios morphed into my adopted brothers. It was a special treat when close clients were touring together! I took the above picture of Rick Savage, Jani, and his bandmates Joey Allen and Erik Turner backstage in Phoenix at a big summer radio festival that boasted both Def Leppard and Warrant on the bill.

9-8. Both these pictures are from the year Jani was one of the two Captains at the annual T.J. Martell Foundation Baseball Charity Game. The other Captain that year was Kip Winger, a former client of mine with whom I had fallen out, so when Jani asked me to help him recruit, and then lead, the finest rock vixens to cheerlead, and also design our uniforms– I was thrilled. Take that, Kip Winger!

7-5. Jani and I always played matchmaker for each other. These pix are from a memorable Moroccan dinner with Andy and Angela McCoy, when I was fixing Jani up with my pal, actress Sherrie Rose. Take another look at the TJ Martell pix, and you will see the seeds being sewn…

4-2. The Cherry Pie video was obviously a defining moment for Jani– personally and professionally. Jeff Stein video shoots were among my favorite– always uber- creative, and he indulged my love of polka dots– but also among the longest– which is why I’m making that face as we were getting close to the 24 hr mark…

1. This is my #1 hands-down. We were both on top of the world when this was taken backstage in Toronto. This is my Jani ♡.

The Jani Lane Memorial concert Monday night at the Key Club featured members of Quiet Riot, L.A. Guns, Great White and Enuff Z’Nuff performing in the singer’s honor, a fitting spot as Lane hung there when it was known as Gazzarri’s and later during Metal Skool aka Steel Panther‘s reign (check this report from Halloween 2007 there, when Lane was on Celebrity Fit Club).

Below, a Youtube clip of LA Guns doing “Ballad of Jayne” — changed to “Lane” for the departed star — at the tribute. Click the Youtube logo for more clips from the event. -LL
