We shot the photo here during an Eric Garcetti appearance a few weeks ago in Echo Park. We were there to investigate rumors about the Rolling Stones playing the Echoplex and decided to stay and hear him speak. His speech was very “I’m OG-Eastside” oriented with tales of boat rides in Echo Park as a kid (the park reopens in June, but the boats will be a while apparently) and dinner with grandma at the neighborhood eateries on the street. He took a lot of  credit for improvements to the area, some of which we believe he is responsible for (others are simply about the natural gentrification growth that we’ve seen as a long time are resident of the area). Garcetti may be the Mayor of LA now, but we’ve been the Queen of Silver Lake for years, babes! Ok, one of the queens Either way, we know of what we speak.

Anyway, before we left EG-the-OG, standing in the very strategic spot between Origami Vinyl and The Echo, he shared a nugget of hipster-wisdom that was clearly sort of a joke, though there was some real sincerity in what he was saying too. We thought it was lame and he was trying too hard to be cool at the time, but today, thinking about it a little more, we think the right guy might have won, at least for our ‘hood. We bet Greuel would have no idea what the quote below even means–

“If you take anything away from my speech today let it be this,” Garcetti said with a deadpan smile. “Taix is pronounced “TEX” not “TAY!!!”

We also added a few new outlets to our cache including Wehoville.com (features on David Arquette & Bootsy Bellows and Weho club promoters)  and Legs McNeil’s Pleasekillme.com (about the Rolling Stones) just this month, and publications that we’ve continued to contribute to include Papermag.com and Los Angeles magazine. Two more new outlets will publish our work this month: Entrepreneur magazine and Pasadena magazine. We’ll share those links when they become available.

With Summer just around the corner, we are planning to bring back the SLUSH too & get into updating here again regularly…  L.A. is more vital than ever, and while we continue to cover it in a variety of different outlets, this site will be the hub where you can find out where we’re doing what, and it will have some original new content too! Many of you may remember Purple Crush from headlines last year as they slapped a lawsuit on Lady Gaga’s former producer/collaborator/boyfriend Rob Fusari for unpaid work on Gaga’s latest album, as well as several other artists. Our coverage in the LA Weekly was credited by the band as a major benefactor to their case. Ultimately, the case was settled and the controversy died down.

Without missing a beat, the pair are back on their musical game with brand new music, including the single “Little Bitch,” a very NSFW tune featuring our additional guests– the ever-vivacious Miss Barbie-Q, queen of all trades Rude Ness, and musical maestro Josh Peace. In addition to their visit to the Moheak Radio station, Tsar will be performing in support of an event very near and dear to our hearts: Micheltorena Elementary School’s Great Pumpkin Festival in Silverlake THIS Saturday, Oct. 27 at 11 am. As parent to an awesome kid who goes to MT, we decided to get involved this year and help book the stage. Bands set to perform also include Fancy Space People (featuring punk icon Don Bolles), Kate Crash, The Tyde, Lil Big Ups to name a few, and Adam O’s Breakfast Show players will be there too! Los Globos nightclub has generously sponsored our stage this year and Moheak Radio has been on board with promos and of course awesome DJs: see yours truly will spin most of the day and Neon Noise’s legendary Paul V from seminal dance club Dragstrip 66 and a frequent spinner at major concerts all over town) pops in for a lil set too!

Events like this one are extremely important, people! Everyone knows public schools are struggling due to budget cuts. The Charter school movement, while an alternative many parents appreciate, is in some ways hurting our community schools and preventing them from improving. Think about this: families who do have resources and the drive to be involved in their children’s education are choosing alternative options more and more, but what if they put all that time and energy into their public school instead? Look no further than Ivanhoe Elementary, one of the most coveted public schools in Los Angeles. Can we do the same at Micheltorena? We hope so. Things are already changing with the addition of duel language classes, new arts programs and the community garden.

It’s our hope that events like this one will not only help bring the community in, but also elevate the school’s profile on a wider scale in the city. Plus, all proceeds are going to send kids on cool field trips! Parents of kids at pre-schools, privates, charters, magnets, home schooled, whatever… all are invited to come to the event Saturday, see what’s happening and enjoy some great rock n’ roll right on the outdoor playground on Sunset Blvd., plus crafts, games, food, a haunted house and more!

Josi will be hanging for the whole show with us and with a childhood filled with eccentricity only Hollywood could provide, this California bombshell has, ahem, ample stories from the road to tantalize viewers.

Additionally, we wrote about punk legend Tony Brandenburg (The Adolescents) and his wife’s fight against the Pasadena Unified School District, which discriminated against their special needs child… Unfortunately, they are still fighting for justice on this issue.

Nightlife, music and fashion journalism is fun and dandy, but it is especially rewarding for us when we can shed light on an issue or struggle such as Tony’s. We were truly inspired by this family, and their persistence and insistence to be heard. Nothing is more punk than that.

New York punk rock legend Jayne County will be rocking The Viper Room Saturday night with the Electric Chairs, playing all the CBGBs/Max’s Kansas City era noise that made her dirty and dynamic superstar. Friday we’ve got her telling us all about it and reminiscing about the good days on LINA IN LA! Our galpal Heidi Richman of Future Content LLC  joined us as co-host and guest, talking about The Strip past and present, and few know the iconic street better. A fixture in the scene during its Metal heyday, this acclaimed “Rock Band Couturier” (Details), turned “Marketing Diva” (LA Weekly) turned tech entrepreneur plans to shake ‘em all together in her upcoming book, Rock n Roll Grad School. We also interviewed SSMF sponsor Jack Daniels’ “master taster” Jeff Norman, who educated all about the iconic brand’s whiskey variety.  Friday, after our broadcast from the Andaz Stones bash, we hit the Doors party at the Sky Bar and X’s “Los Angeles” show (with guest Ray Manzarek) at the Roxy. The next day we covered and shot the street fest headlined by Marilyn Manson, whom we chatted with exclusively a few days prior to the show. It was hands down one of the weirdest  interviews we’ve ever done, so of course we had to talk about it on the show!

As a Stones fan, it was awesome to do our show from this incredible book party, commemorating the band during the recording of what would become regarded as their greatest album, Exile On Main Street.

We have a long standing tradition covering the festival, having done countless write ups and slideshows throughout its history. We’ve recapped the weekend, captured Motley Crue, were among those marveling at Ace Frehley at The Viper Room, held Juliette Lewis as she crowd surfed, and witnessed the unlikely pairing of Slash and Fergie. Suffice to say, we’ve seen, heard, and documented it all!
